Congratulations to Spencer Murphy who was among the winners in the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize announced this month at the National Portrait Gallery. His beautiful portrait of actor Mark Rylance, commissioned for the cover of the Telegraph Magazine, is part of an exhibition of 60 portaits selected by the judges that runs at the NPG until 17 February 2013. His work was also included in the NPG Photographic Portrait Prize (now Taylor Wessing) in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
Murphy says: "I've always enjoyed working with actors as there's no awkwardness or discomfort in front of the camera and they are able to understand direction and react to it very easily. Mark was no exception." An accompanying book features an essay by Sean O'Hagan and interviews with the prizewinners by Richard McClure.
